SB 1.1.2

śrīmad-bhāgavate mahā-muni-kṛte kiṁ vā parair īśvaraḥ
sadyo hṛdy avarudhyate ’tra kṛtibhiḥ śuśrūṣubhis tat-kṣaṇāt
vedyaṁ vāstavam atra vastu śivadaṁ tāpa-trayonmūlanam
śrīmad-bhāgavate mahā-muni-kṛte kiṁ vā parair īśvaraḥ
sadyo hṛdy avarudhyate ’tra kṛtibhiḥ śuśrūṣubhis tat-kṣaṇāt
Translation:
Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhāgavata Purāṇa propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhāgavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyāsadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhāgavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.
Important points:
After offering obeisances to the Absolute Truth Srila Vyasadeva now glorifies the Bhagavatam and defines actual religion
Cheating Religion
- Cheating religion is that which keeps us on the material platform.
- If an activity or religion we engage in does not give Krishna then it is cheating us.
- Religion has dharma artha kama moksha- but the goal should be prema pumartho mahan
- Srila Sridhara Swami comments that the point of the 1.1.2 is to impress upon the readers that SB is the greatest scripture.1.1.2 defines true religion. He asserts that those religions teaching humanity to adore the Lord simply to fulfill one's desires, even up to the point of liberation, are cheating religions. The SB rejects such religions. Pra(the prefix of projjhita) emphasizes the meaning "completely rejected"; this sweeping rejection includes even the desire for salvation.
- Why we take to cheating religion?
- Because of our material desires
- Hence we cheat ourselves, atma ha, self envy
How to receive Transcendental knowledge?
- susrusubhis- Desire to submissively hear is the only qualification
- Connect to srnvatam sva katha krsna - Sri Krsna the benefactor of the truthful devotee to anxious to hear
- What is this truthfulness?
This second sloka of Bhagavatam establishes the main ingredients of the literary work. "Dharmah projjhita kaitavo atra" kaitava means cheating nature, deceiving nature. It deals with dharma where cheating nature is strongly excluded or avoided. Where from religions came I have not understood. That also sweeping rejection including desire for salvation i.e. "mumuksha" . Bhagavad-Gita says bhakti is of four types desiring material wealth, avoiding miseries desiring knowledge/salvation and fully knowing person and tells that fourth type of bhakti is best. The above commentators have not gone up to next word "nirmatsaraanaam sataam" meaning the dharma is of envyless people. One can tell their view but need not spill the venom of envy on other schools of thought by adding non existing words and unwarranted phenomenon s like religions. Why you are denying all the four purusharthaas Dharma, Artha, Kama & Moksha and introducing altogether new pumartha prema. These school of satvatas don't want dharma, wealth, desire leave moksha the salvation which any way they don't want. I will end with only one sentence. "I want sugar on my tongue but I hate the experience of sweet taste resulting out of melting sugar"
