SB 3.25 :The Glories of Devotional Service: 11/24

Uddhava was absorbed in trance of Krishna - he wanted to serve Vidura and thus with great effort he got himself back to external consciousness and spoke at length about Krishna. He then asked Vidura to go to Vidura as Maitreya was more senior to him and also the Lord desired Vidura to hear from Maitreya.

The scene that opens in chapter 25 is continuation of talks between Vidura and Maitreya which is being related to by Suta Goswami to the sages of Naimisaranya.

In the First verse the sages are asking further questions about the discussion between Vidura and Maitreya(24th chapter Kardaam leaves home)

How does the Lord descend?
By his own potency. What is his purpose : As a saktyavesh avatara he disseminates teachings.
Atma Prajnaptaye - to disseminate Xcendental knowledge- that is the purpose-specifically to deliver people from their material existence - essence of the soul is devotional service, by doijg which one is delivered.

Vast portion of the Vedas is about living piously and enjoy the pious results and get elevated to the heavenly planets. But what is the purpose of coming tot he mode of goodness by following the vedas.

SP writes:" The Vedas are meant to elevate one from the mode of ignorance to the platform of goodness. When one is situated in the mode of goodness he is able to understand knowledge of the self, or transcendental knowledge."

Mode of goodness-> expands knowledge of the self. However ordinary men cannot appreciate it- they are too busy chasing after the carrot- they do not have time. External energy works in such a way that they really do not have time.As they desire coming close to Krishna the way time acts on them changes and they gradually have more time.

For those who have some knowledge of the soul:
"Simply to understand that one is not matter but spirit soul (ahaṁ brahmāsmi: "I am by nature Brahman") is not sufficient knowledge for understanding the self and his activities. One must be situated in the activities of Brahman"

What is it like? What happens in the spiritual world? What does one do there?
"Knowledge of those activities is explained by the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself."

Srila Prabhupada is indicating what will be spoken by Kapila Dev to Devahuti.

VErse 2:
Śaunaka continued: There is no one who knows more than the Lord Himself. No one is more worshipable or more mature a yogī than He. He is therefore the master of the Vedas, and to hear about Him always is the actual pleasure of the senses

Glorification of the hearing process: He is teh best - tell us about Lord Kapila Deva

SP:  "....but no one can compare to the Supreme Personality of Godhead." The Lord is asamaurdhava - no or greater or equal to Him. Saunaka says he wants to hear about that person. Kardama /Muni has left, the Lord is with Devahuti - pls describe.

2 Defns of First class YOgi- 1- Yogeshwara- the Lord Himself
2nd is one who associated with Yogeshwara- he becomes of teh same quality as the Lord Himself- the Lord allows his devotees to do things which even He may not do- because He likes the devotee so much.

Of the 2nd Defn there are two - Kardam Muni and Kapila dev- Kapila Dev. Be hearing about Kapila Dev all the senses become most pleased - bec one becomes illuminde to Xdental knowledge and when one thus engages in devotional services and engages all the senses all the senses are pleased.

Verse 4:
Śrī Sūta Gosvāmī said: The most powerful sage Maitreya was a friend of Vyāsadeva. Being encouraged and pleased by Vidura's inquiry about transcendental knowledge, Maitreya spoke as follows.

In this verse Maitreya is called as Bhagavan - because one who associates very intimately with Bhagavn- because of his intimacy he is called as a Bhagavan as well. as explained in the 2 defns of teh yogi in verse 2.

Similarly Vidura is a very intimately associated with the Lord.
When such two great personalities come together - proper speaker and proper recipient- the exchange is powerful and therefore the sages of Naimisaranya were very eager to hear about the exchange.

My question: Axe of detachment - my understanding it is that the cultivation of detachment has to be gradual- if it is to be gradual how do we guard against complacency
Sincere desire, cultivation
sincerity keeps it going and cultivation by incremental advancement - sincerity keep it going and cultivation protects us from complacency.

example- one may want to lead a more simple life- what maybe simple for one may be austere for another, so you define how you want to progress towards simplicity and take gradual incremental steps. Incremental should be what you can sustain and as you reach one position- you take the next step- so sincerely continue taking incremental steps towards that goal

Anarthas can be rid of by Doing DS - and anarthas we must try to consciously try to get rid of?

2 things
Depotional process is active - SP gives eg of standing in shower it is active process you are cl;eansed - thus it is active and our consciousness needs to go to satisfying KRishna- if I develop that I need to satsify KRishna's consciousness - that is the primary char- if this quality is nicely developed it will be pleasing to KRishna - thus following behind that one one can actively cultivate qualities- but if we are not following nehind the one then it wont be sustainable, substantial no you see it now you dont - you want something permannet- natural features of the soul behind that one and in that way it is an active process. when i am attempting along that line- devbekloping a quality pleasing to krishna or eliminate somthing not pleasing it is not my effort- it is Krishna's kindn ess - thats where the bhakti element comes in - therefore we find descriptions that we do not need any extraneous effort - it means nothing outside of devotion- efforts within devotion- krishna eka saranam
