Serving Vaishnavas gives freedom from material contamination

SB 7.5.32
Unless they smear upon their bodies the dust of the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava completely freed from material contamination, persons very much inclined toward materialistic life cannot be attached to the lotus feet of the Lord, who is glorified for His uncommon activities. Only by becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious and taking shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord in this way can one be freed from material contamination.

Vaikuntha Consciousness - everyone is a friend

We think of someone in terms of friend or enemies when we are situated in duality - when we are worried about losing something to someone we consider that person our enemy and when we feel we are gaining something from someone we consider them are friends. Because we are in the material conception of life our relationships are also based on the material conception we carry.

However a spiritually elevated person does not make this distinction - for him everyone is a friend and he is a well-wisher of everyone. He sees everyone as a servant of Krishna and a part and parcel of Krishna. Because he is situated in the spiritual conception , he is not disturbed by duality, he is satisfied in executing devotional service to the lord. Because he desires only service and desires that all living entities experience the taste of devotional service to the Lord he considers everyone his friend.

Prahlada Maharaj clarifies this in SB 7.5.12:

When the Supreme Personality of Godhead is pleased with the living entity because of his devotional service, one becomes a paṇḍita and does not make distinctions between enemies, friends and himself. Intelligently, he then thinks, "Every one of us is an eternal servant of God, and therefore we are not different from one another."

So the neither is the Lord an enemy of anyone and neither is His sincere devotee.

Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu states "jivera ssvarupa haya- krsnera nitya dasa" - the eternal nature of a living entity is to be a servant of Krsna. Srila Prabhupada elaborates in this regard "As servants of the Lord, we are one, and there can be no questions of enmity or friendship. If one actually understands that every one of us is a servant of the Lord, where is the question of enemy or friend?"

Since the servants of the Lord desire only that the Lord be served and glorified in the best possible way how can there be any question of animosity or envy?
Animosity would come in if the servants were also looking for some satisfaction to their ego - but when Krishna is the center and all servants think about how best He can be served then there is no question of enmity.

I also heard in a class by HH Radhanath Maharaj that Prahlada Maharaj considered everyone as his friend because everyone helped him remember Krishna even the demons who were killing him and even his father Krinayaksipu who was envious of him and wanted to kill him. Infact he prayed to Narsimha dev for his fathers liberation.

Srila Prabhupada then wonderfully elaborates the relationship between the servants and their consciousness in service:

"Everyone should be friendly for the service of the Lord. Everyone should praise another's service to the Lord and not be proud of his own service. This is the way of Vaiṣṇava thinking, Vaikuṇṭha thinking. There may be rivalries and apparent competition between servants in performing service, but in the Vaikuṇṭha planets the service of another servant is appreciated, not condemned. This is Vaikuṇṭha competition. There is no question of enmity between servants. Everyone should be allowed to render service to the Lord to the best of his ability, and everyone should appreciate the service of others. Such are the activities of Vaikuṇṭha. Since everyone is a servant, everyone is on the same platform and is allowed to serve the Lord according to his ability."

We see an example of this in the description of Vaikuntha in SB 3.15.18-19

"Although flowering plants like the mandāra, kunda, kurabaka, utpala, campaka, arṇa, punnāga, nāgakeśara, bakula, lily and pārijāta are full of transcendental fragrance, they are still conscious of the austerities performed by tulasī, for tulasī is given special preference by the Lord, who garlands Himself with tulasī leaves."

Srila Prabhupada states in the purport "The most important thing about the spiritual world is that there is no envy among the devotees there. This is true even among the flowers, which are all conscious of the greatness of tulasī."

If this can be developed in our consciousness we will be able to serve Krishna in a much more attentively and enthusiastically and thus glorify Krishna.

Hiranyakasipu ruined due to offenses to Prahlada - a mahabhagavat

SB 7.4.29
When Hiraṇyakaśipu teases the great devotee Prahlāda, his own son, who is peaceful and sober and who has no enemy, I shall kill Hiraṇyakaśipu immediately, despite the benedictions of Brahmā.

Purport:
Of all sinful activities, an offense to a pure devotee, or Vaiṣṇava, is the most severe. An offense at the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava is so disastrous that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has compared it to a mad elephant that enters a garden and causes great havoc by uprooting many plants and trees. If one is an offender at the lotus feet of a brāhmaṇa or Vaiṣṇava, his offenses uproot all his auspicious activities. One should therefore very carefully guard against committing vaiṣṇava-aparādha, or offenses at the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava. Here the Lord clearly says that although Hiraṇyakaśipu had received benedictions from Lord Brahmā, these benedictions would be null and void as soon as he committed an offense at the lotus feet of Prahlāda Mahārāja, his own son. A Vaiṣṇava like Prahlāda Mahārāja is described herein as nirvaira, having no enemies. Elsewhere in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (3.25.21) it is said, ajāta-śatravaḥ śāntāḥ sādhavaḥ sādhu-bhūṣaṇāḥ: a devotee has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the scriptures, and all his characteristics are sublime. A devotee does not create enmity with anyone, but if someone becomes his enemy, that person will be vanquished by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, despite whatever benedictions he may have received from other sources. Hiraṇyakaśipu was certainly enjoying the fruitful results of his austerities, but here the Lord says that as soon as he committed an offense at the lotus feet of Prahlāda Mahārāja he would be ruined. One's longevity, opulence, beauty, education and whatever else one may possess as a result of pious activities cannot protect one if one commits an offense at the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava. Despite whatever one possesses, if one offends the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava he will be vanquished.

Purport to SB 7.4.45:
When a demon like Hiraṇyakaśipu, despite his elevated position due to severe austerities, begins to tease a devotee, he begins falling down, and the results of his austerities dwindle. One who oppresses a pure devotee loses all the results of his austerities, penances and pious activities. Since Hiraṇyakaśipu was now inclined to chastise his most exalted devotee son, Prahlāda Mahārāja, his opulences began dwindling.

The Lord is impartial : we can understand that if we are not envious

In SB 7.1.1 King Pariksit asks Suta Goswami as to why the Lord became partial towards Indra and helped him kill his enemies(Hiranyaksa, Hiranyakasipu, Vrtrasura, etc). Since the Lord says that He is suhrda-sarva-bhutanam [Bg. 5.29], the well-wisher of all living entities, how could He act with partiality by killing demons?

To this Sukadeva Goswami replies (from purport to 7.1.8)"The Supreme Personality of Godhead is not partial to anyone. Everyone works under the influence of various modes of material nature, and when the various modes are prominent, the demigods or demons appear victorious under the influence of these modes." Also because we are covered we cannot fathom the activities of the Lord and consider Him to be partial.

And then Sukadeva Goswami finally says in SB7.1.9 "The all-pervading Personality of Godhead exists within the heart of every living being, and an expert thinker can perceive how He is present there to a large or small extent. Just as one can understand the supply of fire in wood, the water in a waterpot, or the sky within a pot, one can understand whether a living entity is a demon or a demigod by understanding that living entity's devotional performances. A thoughtful man can understand how much a person is favored by the Supreme Lord by seeing his actions."

The essence is the Lord is not partial, He is equally available to everyone. His favor on us depends on our receptivity. As Srila Prabhupada explains this very nicely in his purport : "A teacher instructs the student if the student is capable of taking more and more instructions. Otherwise, in spite of being instructed by the teacher, the student cannot make strides in his understanding. This has nothing to do with partiality. When Krsna says tesam satata-yuktanam bhajatam priti-purvakam/ dadami buddhi-yogam tam, this indicates that Krsna is prepared to give bhakti-yoga to everyone, but one must be capable of receiving it. That is the secret. Thus when a person exhibits wonderful devotional activities, a thoughtful man understands that Krsna has been more favorable to this devotee.

Non-Enviousness
Thus devotees must be non-envious and must understand that Krsna has bestowed His favor upon a devotee owing to his advanced position and because of that Krsna does not become partial. We must not become envious and try to minimize the devotee's activities.

A Vaishnava should thus be nirmatsara - non envious and must appreciate the service rendered to the Lord by other devotees.

Srila Prabhupada further elaborates with an analogy:

"Krsna is equal to everyone, and according to one's ability to receive the favor of Krsna, one advances in Krsna consciousness. Srila Vishwanatha Cakravarti Thakura gives a practical example in this connection. In the sky there are many luminaries. At night, even in darkness, the moon is extremely brilliant and can be directly perceived. The sun is also extremely brilliant. When covered by clouds, however, these luminaries are not distinctly visible. Similarly, the more one advances in sattva-guna, the more his brilliance is exhibited by devotional service, but the more one is covered by rajo-guna and tamo-guna, the less visible his brilliance, for he is covered by these qualities. The visibility of one's qualities does not depend on the partiality of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; it is due to various coverings in different proportions. Thus one can understand how far he has advanced in terms of sattva-guna and how much he is covered by rajo-guna and tamo-guna."

Indra's 3rd offense:Kills a great devotee Vrtrasura and Rsi Dadhici

Vrtrasura was a devotee in the guise of a demon and he was performing his devotional service on the battlefield by fighting with Indra. Vrtrasura the demon was created because of Indra's offense of killing Vishwarupa. To protect himself from the reaction of killing Vishwarupa , Indra had to commit 2 more offenses - asking Rsi Dadhici for his bones to make the thunderbolt(i.e asks Dadhici for his life) and kill a great dvotee like Vrtrasura.

Lessons from 3rd offense:

Offenses are entangling. To protect ourselves from reactions to our offense we commit further offenses and get entangled in the mess. Best is to take a humble position and ask for forgiveness from the Vaishnavas and the Lord and tolerate the reaction instead of trying to counter attack it with further arrangements.

We see that Indra does not learn between these offenses as he is overwhelmed in trying to counteract these offenses. On hearing this story we can see the correlation between his offenses and the reaction and may wonder why Indra does not humbly accept the situation and try to understand Krsna's message for him. However in our personal situation when we encounter difficult times we fail to realize it is due to our past offenses. My personal situation is not very different from Indra.I fail to learn the lessons from difficult situations. I am very far from the realization that they are due to my past Krma even if I theoretically understand it. I spend a lot of time in trying to counteract the difficulty and forget on using this as an opportunity to further my relationship with Krsna. I pray that this important message stays with me.

The Lord has used His devotee Indra to perform these pastimes to teach me some wonderful messages and I hope and pray that I can learn from them.

Indra 1st offense: does not offer proper respect to his Guru Brhaspati

In the 6th canto, in the story of Vrtrasura- a great devotee of the Lord we read about Indra offending the three Brahmanas - Brhaspati, Vishwarupa and Vrtrasura. He is haunted by the resulting sinful reactions and does not find peace anywhere. To protect himself from the results of each offense he commits a new offense each time. We see that he keeps getting thus entangled due to his attachment for material opulence and power. This is not very different from what neophytes like me get entangled in.

This is a three part article that helps us examine the different motivations for each of the offenses and the lessons to be learned from each so that we can try to avoid the same and be more respectful in our interactions. In each part we will examine each offense.

Indra's first offense : Indra Offends Brhaspati, his Guru
Once when Brhaspati , the spiritual master of all the demigods was visiting Lord Indra, Indra did not get up from his seat , did not offer obeisances and neither offered a seat to him, even when he was his Guru. This was a grave transgression of etiquette. Indra was also accepting worship and glorification in his Guru's presence and because of being overly attached and proud of his material opulence he forgot his duties.

Lessons from the first offense :
Srila Prabhupada states in the purport to SB 6.7.12 "According to the laws of nature, when one is extremely opulent one becomes degraded, and this is true both individually and collectively".
Material opulence leads to pride. As we see in this pastime - pride and obsession with the material energy makes us callous towards vedic ideals. We may not experience such gross material opulence like Indra- being fanned by Gandharvas, Kinnaras with Apsaras dancing and white umbrella's over our head. However we experience the subtle opulence of fame, prestige, extraordinary talent, high position at work, etc.If we are not firmly rooted in our sadhana we will remain in material consciousness by enjoying those things and go further deep in material consciousness. We will become callous and commit offenses to people around us.

By committing offenses - aparadha , Radharani's mercy will leave us and we will slip in our devotional service. Offenses make us weak in our spiritual life. We not only slip from the spiritual platform but we also become increasingly susceptible to Maya's attacks.. We can also see this with Indra- because of this offense we see him gliding down further in the material pool and committing further offenses.Being firmly rooted in our sadhana, in strong association of devotees and developing a service attitude towards devotees will help us protect ourselves from mundane pride and its effects. By associating and serving devotees we will be able to see their wonderful qualities which our many times better than us.

We must accept our situation as a result of our previous actions and thus pray fervently to the Supreme Lord Krsna for His mercy and offer devotional service unto Him. This will clear all the misgivings in our heart.

In the next post we will see the effects of the first offense and how Indra gets entangled as a result of this offense. And then how he commits another offense to counteract the effects of this offense.

Lord's darshan removes all material contaminations

6.16.31 Text:As soon as Mahārāja Citraketu saw the Supreme Lord, he was cleansed of all material contamination and situated in his original Kṛṣṇa consciousness, being completely purified. He became silent and grave, and because of love for the Lord, tears fell from his eyes, and his hairs stood on end. With great devotion and love, he offered his respectful obeisances unto the original Personality of Godhead.

6.16.31 Purport:The word tad-darśana-dhvasta-samasta-kilbiṣaḥ is very important in this verse. If one regularly sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the temple, one will gradually be disinfected of all material desires simply by visiting the temple and seeing the Deity. When one is freed from all the results of sinful activities, one will be purified, and with a healthy mind, completely cleansed, he will increasingly make progress in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

6.16.44 Text:
My Lord, it is not impossible for one to be immediately freed from all material contamination by seeing You. Not to speak of seeing You personally, merely by hearing the holy name of Your Lordship only once, even caṇḍālas, men of the lowest class, are freed from all material contamination. Under the circumstances, who will not be freed from material contamination simply by seeing You?
6.16.45 Text:Therefore, my dear Lord, simply seeing You has now wiped away all the contamination of sinful activities and their results of material attachment and lusty desires, which always filled my mind and the core of my heart. Whatever is predicted by the great sage Nārada Muni cannot be otherwise. In other words, I have obtained Your audience as a result of being trained by Nārada Muni.
6.16.45 Purport excerpt : As soon as one sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead, all the sinful reactions in the core of one's heart are certainly vanquished.
